Routes > Pomerado
Description
Pomerado is an excellent intermediate ride. While it isn't too long and difficult, it isn't too
short either. It offers good roads with decent shoulders and some good scenery. It has longer hills,
and some short, punchy hills. This is a true loop - a rarity in this area!
The short section of this ride on the freeway is perhaps the worst part of the ride, aesthetically.
However, the shoulder's width provides a full lane's buffer from cars, and the alternative is easily
45-60 minutes longer.
Difficulty Moderate
Duration 2.5-3 hours
Distance 79.07 kilometers
Climbing 903 meters
Note: The distances are only approximate. The map is from 1975 and I had to guess where the route went on campus which affects the whole route and calculated distances. In addition, Pomerado has been widened and re-routed.
0.0 KM Start at the corner of Regents Rd. and Miramar St.
Head north on Regents.
0.15 KM Turn right onto Eastgate Mall. Continue across I-805 and
bear right with the curve of the road.
3.54 KM Turn left onto Miramar Road. I have found that the light
sensor fails to sense a bicycle, so you may have to press the walk button.
10.63 KM Miramar Rd. turns into Pomerado Road at the crossing of
I-15. Before this intersection you will need to merge to the left twice for two forced right-hand
turn lanes.
16.83 KM At the top of the climb, turn right at the light. The road remains
Pomerado Rd. Continue on Pomerado for nearly 17 km.
33.54 KM Enter the left turn lane for Interstate 15 North, towards Escondido.
You will ride on the shoulder, part of the way with barriers on your left.
35.32 KM Exit the freeway at the first off-ramp. Carefully move to the left turn
lane, in order to turn left onto West Via Rancho Parkway.
40.76 KM After a few hills, turn left onto Del Dios Hwy (S6). This corner intersects
the path of Elfin Forest.
54.67 KM You'll enter a small, upscale community called Rancho Santa Fe. After you pass the shops,
Take a soft right onto Linea Del Cielo, which is also called S6.
59.59 KM Go straight through the stop sign with cross street Highland Dr. The road changes name to Lomas
Santa Fe Dr. Continue on this road, under the freeway, and up the gradual hill. On the descent down into Solana beach,
you will have to make your way over to the left in order to...
63.06 KM Turn left onto Old Hwy 101. Continue along the coast back to campus using your
preferred route. From campus you should know the way home!
